Thank you for reading with Bokumi. These terms are an agreement between you and the developer of Bokumi (“Bokumi”, “we”, “us”). They cover the Bokumi app for iPhone, iPad and Mac (the “App”), this website, and Bokumi Plus. By downloading, installing or using the App or the website you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use Bokumi.
1. Bokumi is a reader, and only a reader#
Bokumi is software that displays the files and pages that you choose to open, the way a web browser, an e-book app or a photo viewer does, and keeps your shelf, your place and your settings. It is a tool for reading. It is not a source of anything to read.
- Bokumi hosts nothing. We do not host, store, cache, upload, transmit, relay, index or catalog any manga, comics, books, images or other works, on any server. We run no servers that hold or pass on content.
- Bokumi provides nothing to read. The App ships with no content, no extensions, no repositories, no sources and no links to any. Neither the App nor this website lists, ranks, recommends or points to any place to read.
- Your device does the reading. When you open something, your device reads it from your own storage or connects directly to the place you chose. We are not part of that connection: we don't see it, log it or carry it, and we have no way to change or remove what it carries.
- We don't know what you read. We collect nothing about you, so we have no knowledge of what you open and no way to monitor it.
- We are not a publisher, a scanlation group, an aggregator, a catalog, a marketplace, a distributor or a content provider, and we have no relationship with anyone who offers works without permission.
- Nothing in the App or on this website is an offer of, or a link to, any work. No title, cover or image in our materials means that work can be read, or read for free, in Bokumi.
- The artwork in our screenshots and on this website is public domain or used with permission, and is credited.
Because Bokumi only displays what you bring to it, what you read, where it comes from and whether you have the right to read it are your choice and your responsibility alone, as sections 2 to 7 explain.
2. What you can read#
You may use Bokumi only with material that is one of these:
- yours, such as books and files you bought without copy protection, or art and comics you made;
- licensed to you by its rights holder for the way you are reading it, such as a service you subscribe to;
- in the public domain where you live; or
- made freely available by its rights holder to be read this way.
Copies you make of books you own (for example, scans) are only allowed where the law where you live allows them.
Whether you have the right to read something is your responsibility. “It was online”, “it was free” and “everyone does it” are not rights. When in doubt, buy it, borrow it from a library, or read what creators and publishers share themselves.
3. Things Bokumi must never be used for#
Manga and comics exist because artists, writers, translators, editors and publishers are paid for their work. We built Bokumi to make reading their work more pleasant, not to make it easier to take. We do not condone piracy, and we don't tolerate it.
You agree not to use Bokumi, or let anyone else use it, to:
- view, download, store, copy, share, stream or distribute pirated, unlicensed or infringing material;
- connect Bokumi to any repository, extension, source, server, website or service that offers material without its rights holder's permission, or to promote, recommend or share one;
- get around copy protection, digital rights management, paywalls, region locks, age gates or any other access control, in Bokumi or with other tools for use in Bokumi;
- overload, harm or interfere with any service, or use one against its own terms;
- infringe anyone's copyright, trademark, privacy or other rights, or help someone else do so; or
- break any law that applies to you.
If you do, you do it on your own and you are responsible for it, alone. We may respond to misuse, at our discretion and as far as we can, by limiting or withdrawing features, stopping the App from working with an extension or repository, ending your license under these terms, refusing service, and cooperating with rights holders, platforms and authorities. Apple may also remove the App. Rights holders can reach us through the content policy.
4. Your books and files#
What you bring stays yours. Files you import are copied into the App on your device, and we never receive them, look at them or claim any right to them. Keep the originals; the App's copies are not included in sync or backups. If you delete the App, its copies go with it.
5. Extensions, repositories and other sources you add#
The App can connect to things other people make and run: extensions, extension repositories, servers, websites and services. It ships with none of them, and suggests none.
- We don't own, operate, control, review, verify, rate, recommend or endorse any extension, repository or source, and a name appearing anywhere in the App or on this website is not an endorsement.
- We don't host, publish or distribute any extension or repository that gives access to third-party content, and we have no part in what one provides.
- You alone decide what to add and what to open with it, and you alone are responsible for that choice and its consequences.
- Extensions run in a sandbox and must declare where they connect. That limits what they can do; it is not a promise that any extension is safe, accurate, lawful or working.
- Their makers' terms and privacy practices apply when you use them. If a source changes, breaks or disappears, the App may stop working with it, and that isn't a fault in the App.
6. If you make or share an extension#
You are welcome to write extensions and publish repositories for places you have the right to read from, like your own server or a service that allows it. If you do:
- you must have the right to access, and let others access, everything your extension reaches;
- you must not make or share extensions or repositories for pirated or unlicensed material;
- you must follow the terms of every service your extension talks to; and
- you must not use the Bokumi name, cat or icons in a way that suggests we made, checked or endorse your work.
What you publish is yours and your responsibility. We may stop the App from installing or running any extension or repository that breaks these terms.
7. Trackers, iCloud and Apple#
If you connect a tracking service, use iCloud sync, or buy through the App Store, you also use services run by others, under their own terms and privacy policies. Logging in to a tracker is between you and that tracker. Apple runs iCloud and the App Store.
8. Mature material#
Bokumi includes no material of any kind, mature or not. Sources marked 18+ stay hidden unless you turn them on. By turning them on, you confirm you are an adult where you live and that you want to see them. Parents and guardians can use Screen Time to limit the App, and are responsible for what their children open with it.
9. Bokumi Plus, purchases and refunds#
Bokumi Plus is optional. Reading is free without it.
What Plus is. Plus unlocks features of the App: themes, icons, widgets, Reading Insights, advanced reader settings, downloads, iCloud sync, tracking and automatic backups, and features we add to Plus later. Plus does not include, unlock, buy or pay for any manga, comics or other content.
How it's sold. Plus is sold through the Apple App Store as a monthly subscription, a yearly subscription and a one-time Lifetime purchase, at the prices the App Store shows for your region.
- Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the same price and length unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Your account is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends.
- Manage or cancel in Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal; Plus stays on until the end of the period you already paid for.
- Lifetime is one payment and doesn't renew. It lasts for as long as we offer Bokumi Plus in the App. It is not a promise that the App, or any feature, will be available forever.
- We may change prices and what Plus includes for future purchases and renewals, as Apple's rules allow.
All sales are final. Every purchase of Bokumi Plus is final and non-refundable. We don't offer refunds, credits or partial refunds, including for unused time, partly used periods, features you didn't use, a change of mind, or an extension or source that stopped working. Apple processes every purchase, so we never see your payment and can't issue or reverse refunds ourselves. If you believe a charge was a mistake, you can ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com; Apple decides refund requests under its own policies. Nothing in this section takes away any right you have under consumer law that cannot be waived.
If Plus ends, nothing is deleted. Plus features stop applying and come back when you buy again or restore your purchase.
Test builds. Beta builds through TestFlight may unlock Plus for testing. That is not a purchase and ends with the beta.
10. Privacy#
Bokumi has no ads, no analytics and no account. How the App treats data is in the privacy policy.
11. Our app and your license#
Bokumi, its name, the cat and the app icons, the launch animation, the design and this website belong to us or our licensors. We give you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use the App on Apple devices you own or control, as the App Store's Usage Rules allow, including Family Sharing where it applies. You may not copy, modify, rent, sell, distribute or make derivative works of the App, reverse engineer it except where the law allows it despite this term, remove its notices, or use it to build a competing product. Third-party and open-source components keep their own licenses.
12. Ideas you send us#
We love hearing from readers. If you send an idea, a suggestion or a bug report, we may use it to improve Bokumi without owing you anything for it, and you are under no obligation to send any.
13. Use at your own risk#
BOKUMI IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”, WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, ACCURACY, AVAILABILITY OR UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE OPERATION. We don't promise that the App will meet your needs, that it will work with any particular file, extension or service, that it will be free of bugs, defects or security vulnerabilities, or that your data will never be lost. YOU USE BOKUMI AT YOUR OWN RISK. Please keep your own backups.
14. Limit of liability#
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, BOKUMI AND ITS DEVELOPER, AND THEIR AFFILIATES, CONTRACTORS AND LICENSORS, WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, REVENUE OR GOODWILL, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THE APP, THE WEBSITE OR THESE TERMS, WHATEVER THE THEORY OF LIABILITY, EVEN IF WE WERE TOLD IT COULD HAPPEN. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR BOKUMI IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM AND USD $50.
Some places don't allow some of these limits. There, they apply only as far as the law permits, and rights you have as a consumer that cannot be waived are not affected.
15. You will cover us#
You agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless Bokumi, its developer, and their affiliates and contractors from any claim, demand, loss, damage, penalty, cost or expense (including reasonable legal fees) that arises from or relates to: your use of the App; any material you open, store or share with it; any extension, repository, source, server or service you connect to it or publish for it; your breach of these terms or of any law; or your infringement of anyone's rights.
16. Age#
You must be old enough to agree to these terms where you live. If you are not, a parent or guardian must agree to them for you, and is responsible for your use of the App.
17. Changes, ending, and the rest#
We may change or stop the App, Bokumi Plus, the website or these terms. When we change these terms, we update the date at the top; using Bokumi after that means you accept the new version. You can stop at any time by deleting the App. Your license ends automatically if you break these terms. Sections 2 to 6, 9 (as to purchases already made) and 13 to 18, and any term that by its nature should survive, survive. If a term can't be enforced, the rest still stands. Not enforcing a term is not a waiver of it. These terms and the pages they link are the whole agreement between us about Bokumi. You may not transfer your rights under them; we may.
18. Governing law#
These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction where the developer is established, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and the courts there have exclusive jurisdiction, except that you may bring a claim in the courts where you live if mandatory consumer law gives you that right. Please write to us first. Most problems are quicker to fix than to argue about.
19. Terms Apple requires#
These apply because you get the App from the Apple App Store.
- These terms are between you and Bokumi, not Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for the App and its content.
- Your license is limited to Apple-branded products you own or control, under the Usage Rules in Apple's Media Services Terms and Conditions.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the App.
- If the App fails to meet a warranty that applies, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price for the App, if any. To the maximum extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the App, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses from a failure to meet a warranty are our responsibility, to the extent these terms don't disclaim them.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for any claims about the App or your use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the App fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.
- If anyone claims that the App or your use of it infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging that claim.
- You confirm that you are not in a country under a US government embargo or designated as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not on any US government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- You must follow any third-party terms that apply when you use the App, such as your mobile data plan.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms, and once you accept them, Apple has the right to enforce them against you.
